Diving is a 1:1 full-scale figure that was rendered with wires, burlap and wool. It is inspired by an experience of mine many years ago. I can never forget the diving moment near an island call Green Island near my homeland, Taiwan. The under water surface was extremely beautiful and filled with groups of colorful fish and different shapes of coral reefs. One fish was so close to me that I wanted to catch it. At that moment, I was completely released like a little child.
I sought to bring the sensation of being surround by beautiful ocean creatures into this work to express the idea of transformation.
Diving expresses a transitional process: a body dives into the surface and then immediately forms a new life under the water to catch the colorful fish. This is a metaphor for the chance I took: although jumping into the ocean from a cliff is risky, and holding one’s breath in the water is uncomfortable, it is fun to observe a different world under the surface.
