Book Sorter Lelystad

Lelystad Book Sorter

The Netherlands, 2009. Lelystad Book Sorter. Fully automated high tech book sorter adds fun and value to book intake. And saves labour and money, too.

Situation
Newly designed library wants to add customer value by super fast recirculation of returned books. Yep, fresh books are always better!

Target
Design an innovative way to recirculate returned books. Make it fun to use and make sure to confront customers with unexpected content.

Action
Rethinking the book handling process: books no longer go to a backstage area for daylong sorting and intake. First, customers take in their own books. Second, books are displayed on a conveyor belt. Third, the next customer picks its book. All in full public.

Result
An 11 meters long book sorter and display unit that reminds of airport luggage reclaim machines. Adds high tech look and feel to the library. Reduces the amount sorting handling by 40% and provides easy and fast fresh books.
