Sparetime Redesign
To sidestep IP concerns, update design language and improve fit, Yakima needed to redesign their spare tire bike rack. The growing trend in aftermarket wheels and tires makes it difficult to ensure a proper fit. This can lead to improper weight distribution and rattling of the rack. The problem was two-fold: to redesign the rack to fit a wider range of aftermarket wheels and tires and to limit tooling costs and utilize as many existing parts as possible.
How might we adapt rack design for an increasingly unpredictable market?
