Grøndby Strand- Renovation of Brøndby Strand

Winning proposal for the renovation of Brøndby Strand in Copenhagen.

Brøndby Strand is a huge housing development, best known for the distinctive silhouette of twelve 16-storey concrete towers. Housing over 8,000 residents, its renovation is one of the most extensive in Denmark’s history

As part of the team responsible for the handling of the architectural elements of the competition my focus was on the reworking of the towers to exceed energy standards, enhance liveability and provide the area new icons of a more human character.

The proposal presented breaks the monotonous expression of the towers by introducing variation and relief in the facade and creating open balconies, a feature originally present when the towers were built in 1967-73. The facade interventions act to scale down the monolithic high-rises by making each tower a collection of individually recognisable apartments- a design decision meant to bring human dimensions back to the buildings.
