1589 Gift Store

1589 is a gift store in Ægisdjúp Cultural Center. The center is based in Djúpivogur, Iceland.
Djúpivogur has a long history and was an important port for Germans and later Danish traders from the 14th century onwards. German traders from Hamburg obtained an exclusive license to trade in Djúpivogur from the Danish king in the 15th century. That license was signed on June 20th, 1589 and that date is said to mark the beginning of settlement in Djúpivogur. Trading has been ongoing since that date. The German traders were mostly buying fish oil and stockfish from locals in the area.
The store's interior is inspired by the area's main export from the time of the first traders that settled in Djúpivogur.
