Ariadne (coffee table), Spring 2012

The design of this coffee table was inspired by Ariadne, a character in Greek mythology who was in charge of the labyrinth containing the Minotaur. She assisted Theseus in killing the minotaur by giving him a sword and a ball of red thread to assist him in navigating his way out of the labyrinth. Ariadne’s thread as a theory in logic applies to problem solving and is capable of locating all possible solutions to a problem. The approach involves blindly exhausting the search space completely, finding any and all solutions. This theory acts as a metaphor for the process that went in to designing this table. Each material study was more or less a blind search for any and all possible solutions in terms of weaving wood. The deconstruction of the weaving into the final form was my way of following Ariadne’s thread out of the labyrinth of infinite possibilities.
