Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Gypsy Wanderer Trend Board: General Theme. Due to long lead times in the development of technical outerwear, these boards were created in the Fall of 2014 meant to inspire the collection that would hit stores 2 years later. This required that I have a good handle on current trends at the time as well as the ability to predict how the market would evolve. As the Senior Design Manager for Women's Outerwear & Apparel I was responsible for curating the overall direction and approval of the final boards which consist of imagery collected myself along with members of my design team.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Gypsy Wanderer Trend Board: Mood. This theme, entitled "Gypsy Wanderer" was used to inspire the Burton women's heritage line. Classic military and utilitarian silhouettes decorated with motifs and details from around the globe. These images were selected to quickly convey the overall mood for the collection.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Gypsy Wanderer Trend Board: Silhouette. These images were selected to show specific examples of succesful applications of this trend in outerwear.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Gypsy Wanderer Trend Board: Prints & Trims. This board shows patterns found in high fashion and streetwear that exemplify this trend as well as zippers, pullers, and embellishments.
Burton women's FW 2016/17 Gypsy Wanderer Trend Board Development. In order to create the trend boards, myself and my design team spent a lot of time researching via magazines, runway shows, brand websites, blogs, people watching, in-store shopping, etc. to get a vibe for what is happening. We then sorted the imagery we collected into loose themes. This slide illustrates my reviewing and beginning to edit out less relevant images in order to better focus the final content for Gypsy Wanderer.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Brooklyn Trend Board: General Theme. Like the Gypsy Wanderer theme, these boards were also created in Fall of 2014 for a collection that would hit stores 2 years later. The Brooklyn line was meant to be separate from the heritage style Gypsy Wanderer line and targets a trend that is more fashion forward. Here you see a bit of the "athleisure" influence that was taking over the runways at the time this board was created.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Brooklyn Trend Board: Prints & Trims. For this trend I saw glitchy geometric patterns and soft ethereal space-scapes. To add an element of edginess, stark slogan patches and irreverent content prints (like lips) could be introduced on a few pieces in the collection. Material surfaces (matte vs shine) are very important to this look as well with black and white being key colors.
Burton Women's FW 2016/17 Brooklyn Trend Board: Silhouette. For the Brooklyn girl we can push the boundaries of fashion a bit with oversized rounded shoulders, extreme A-lines and cropped shapes. These pieces are meant to showcase the silhouette and fabric with minimal pocketing and cut-lines to distract the eye.
The White Collection Junior's FW 2016/17 Trend Board: General Theme. These boards were also created in Fall 2014, 2 years before the collection's release date. This line was aimed at young women age 12-17. The intention was to incorporate the emerging 90's nostalgia trend with simple geometric patterns, bold colors and oversized branding or slogans. Current phrases like "WTF" or "hashtag" bring this trend into modern times.
The White Collection Junior's FW 2016/17 Trend Board: Silhouette. For this line the silhouettes are simple and classic: a bomber, a parka, and an M65. The main focus is print and color blocking.
The White collection Junior's FW 2016/17 Trend Board: Prints & Trims. 2 color geometric prints with an early 90's flair paired with colorful trims. Black and White patterns trims mixed with bright colors.
Burton Spring 2017 In-Progress Trend Board. For this season, it was my suggestion to take a new approach and bring the men's and women's design teams together. Each designer contributed their inspiration tears during a live meeting. A natural theme began to emerge as the group worked together to organize images. This slide shows the outcome from the meeting. A final edit was made by myself and the rest of the design leadership to add supplemental images and finalize the above selections into a cohesive story.
L.A.M.B. by Burton FW 2016/17 Trend Board. These boards were created in early 2015. The collection was a collaboration between Burton and Gwen Stefani's brand L.A.M.B. I worked with our Los Angeles based designers and together we met with Gwen Stefani and the L.A.M.B. design director to present and review trends. These final boards were created after a round of edits from direction given by Gwen along with my direction as the voice of Burton Women's Outerwear. this line was a fun mash-up of disparate ideas and a delicate balance of fashion and functionality.
