Handcrafted Box with Locking Rabbet, Two-Drawers

It was love at first cut. The swirling, tumultuous grain movement of what became the top, sides and drawer fronts propelled the inspiration behind this project. With this handful of small, maple cutoff pieces I've been coveting for a year or so the concept was born.

The box top, bottom and sides are attached by a locking rabbet with a through dado partition and the back panel is compression fit into a four-sided rabbet (scroll to last two photos to see these joints before construction). The draw fronts are grain matched and slightly set back from the box face to add depth.

The drawer boxes are, admittedly, fairly shallow due to the constraints of using small cutoff pieces. One is Maple and the other is Cherry both have a rabbeted Baltic Birch plywood bottom.

Finished with Howard's Paste Wax.
