Built in the 1970s in the Brutalist style, UMass Lowell's O'Leary Library suffered from little maintenance over its 40-year existence, and the challenge was to imbue new life into the tired structure and to transform it into a hub for academic learning. The reading room with its natural light and open plan became a strong focus for the design approach. WSA produced a design for a refined series of spaces, including computing zones, study group rooms, a technology classroom, and informal areas.
