Dingbat Book Cover The Challenge: To create a book cover and spine using a combination of type and dingbats. The Solution: I created a book cover and spine using wallpaper pattern and a transparent overlay of orange color as the background. The graphics were created using a mix of Celtic and Chinese patterns, along with standard dingbats.
Mise en Scene The Challenge: Create a picture that tells a story using multiple image layers. The Solution: I used an image of a sailing ship passing an island as the basis of the image. Using Photoshop, I cut out the sky above the clouds and added one that was a little more stormy. I masked in an image of Jack Sparrow and a compass rose to give the piece a more piratical flavor.
Halloween Card The Challenge: To create a Halloween card using a limited palette of no more than 4 colors. The Solution: I created a Halloween card using only 2 colors, purple and black. White is not counted as a color as it can be brought in by having it as the color of the paper. I drew the image of the tree and the scared cat by hand, then scanned it into the computer. I used Photoshop to clean up and color the image, with a background of purple and the spooky tree and the scared cat rendered in black. The card is meant to be humorous, and carries an appropriate Halloween message inside, along with a cropped image of the cat.
Tschichold Book Jacket The Challenge: To create a book jacket that reflects the design aesthetics of an assigned typographer. In this case; Jan Tschichold. The Solution: My book jacket was created to reflect the design principles of Jan Tschichold, a German-born designer who influenced typography and book design. His aesthetic was simplicity, so I used a minimalist approach. The jacket is a solid red, which is eye-catching, with the accompanying text being rendered in white, for contrast. The picture on the front cover was selected because it depicts Tschichold as a meticulous person. Something for which he was known. The picture on the back cover was a posed shot of him standing outside a building in Switzerland, which became his home country after he was forced to flee from Germany.

Caterpillar Trade Show Booth The Challenge: To create a trade show booth design representing an established company. The Solution: I found an existing photograph of a trade show booth design that gave me the sort of feel I wanted for this project. Using Photoshop, I layered in the trade show panel designs I had created, then distorted them to create the illusion of perspective and aligned them with the existing parts of the trade show booth.
Punctuation Poster The Challenge: To create a poster that incorporates an assigned punctuation mark. The Solution: Thinking of the different ways numbers impact our lives, I finally decided on a poster that illustrates how we become faceless numbers to the many bureaucracies of our world. I used a photograph of a group of people standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles, then used Photoshop to remove their heads and replace them with number signs.
Blackmore's Night CD Cover The Challenge: To re-create a music CD cover and the lyrics book for an established band. The Solution: I chose the Celtic folk music group of Blackmore's Night as the band, and the CD titled Shadow of the Moon. I decided to have the moon figure prominently into the imagery for the CD cover, then masked in the slightly weathered, antique clock face. I used a green background that would contrast well with both the image and the text that would be used in the lyrics book.
Blackmore's Night CD The Challenge: To re-create a music CD cover and the lyrics book for an established band. The Solution: I chose the Celtic folk music group of Blackmore's Night as the band, and the CD titled Shadow of the Moon. I carried over the imagery of the CD cover and used it as the image of the cd label. For the song list, I used a gold typeface on a green background for contrast.

The Solution: I chose the Celtic folk music group of Blackmore's Night as the band, and the CD titled Shadow of the Moon. I used a gold typeface on a green background, then added images of the band to help break up the text and to give it more of a lyric book feel.

The Solution: I chose the Celtic folk music group of Blackmore's Night as the band, and the CD titled Shadow of the Moon. For the back cover, I used a gold typeface on a green background, then added an image of the band's members that were together when the album was recorded.
Art Word Design The Challenge: To create an embellished design using the word "art", for use as clipart. The Solution: I started with the Harrington typeface as the basis from which to start. I added additional design elements to embellish the letters, as well as elements that represented art. The image was scaled and formatted, then uploaded to the company clipart database. The example above was printed on a ribbon 2 inches wide, by 8 inches long.

Phoenix Clipart The Challenge: To create a clipart image of a phoenix for use by customers. The solution: I created an image similar to the Trans Am logo, but went for a shape that was more circular. I also simplified the image so it would be more legible when printed on a ribbon with metal foil. The example shown above was printed on a ribbon 4 inches wide by 1.625 inches.

STEM Clipart: These are clipart images I designed for use by customers. In the first two, I adapted existing STEM clipart by substituting symbols that I thought better represented Science, Technology and Engineering. I kept the pi symbol for Mathematics because it is the most recognizable. For the third version, I used text only, for those who wanted something more simple. I warped the first letter of each word to fit inside a circle, but otherwise stayed with a regular font for the text.
ABAT Brochure: This is a brochure I was contracted to design for the American Board of Applied Toxicology. The client wanted a simple, easy to read brochure that was text-based. He also specified the color of the brochure. I also taught the client some of the basics of InDesign while we were working on the brochure.

This is a freelance project I was commissioned for, by Portland State University. It's a custom cover for an Algebra textbook that better represents the university. I used the approved Portland State approved branding color as the background color, then used a slightly darker color to make a pattern to give the representation of raindrops. The photograph is a stock image that was purchased by the university, for use in the project.
