The Mini Soil Blockers for Johnny's Selected Seeds were some of the most satisfying products for me. When we first set out to develop a soil blocker, a handheld unit wasn't really on the table. However, as we were developing the full tray soil blockers, I saw this opportunity. We were planning on using cast features for the plungers and I realized that we could easily spin-off handheld units as well. We were able to double our product offering and to capture more of the market.
Soil blocking is a new technique but one that found it's way over from Europe decades ago. The downside is that up until the Johnny's product, there were no options that properly fit a standard US planting tray (10 x 20 tray or a 1020 tray). We formatted these soil blockers to fit a 1020 perfectly so that growers could more quickly and efficiently fill them.
