Aldilà / Temporary residence for refugees

The workshop topic was designing a temporary residence for refugees inside the Duomo of Milan. The layout is based on two main drivers: the refugees’ needs in relation to their expected staying. All needed functions are organized in sequency, in fact at the entrance we find the spaces most urgently required, such as storage, infirmary, dormitory; ahead there are the spaces for those expected to stay for a long period such as private rooms, laundry and others. The shelter is located in the two northern aisles and it takes up almost half of the church’s space: so, a mirror has been installed along the naves’s axis with the aim of ironically giving the churchgoers and the tourists back the perception of the entire Duomo.
