Windhover - An annual project for the students, faculty and staff of NC State University, our aim was to at least partially step away from the computer, introduce a level of collaboration not seen in previous years, and let our process and the work become more open and transparent. Two cover designing events were coordinated to which not only contributors but all people associated with NC State were invited to take part. We provided blank covers, pens and paint, music and candy. What evolved were two separate evenings of community and creativity and eventually 2000 unique hand-made covers. The Kraftpak is reminiscent of childhood when books were wrapped in brown paper bags and decorated. The screws and exposed binding speaks to the handicraft of the project and hopefully introduces a sense of playfulness, making what can be a precious project more accessible and interesting. To this end our own “rants” were randomly placed, and also unobtrusive quotes about collaboration.
