Another variation on a Swamp Lurker character I created. This one lives symbiotically with a fungus that grows out of it's head. Hand-drawn and colored in Photoshop.
I was visiting a friend in Yokohama, so I decided to experiment with that city name and see what kind of hand-type solution I could come up with. Pen & ink drawing and coloring/texturing in Photoshop.
Another character I created for fun. I call this one Swamp Lurker: a nocturnal creature who dwells in swamps and bogs and lives off of the decaying matter in his habitat. Hand drawn and then colored in PS.
A root character I drew recently for fun and scanned into PS to color. I've been developing some similar characters that are also based on plant life and nature. More to come!
Hand-type experiments that I did for some slogans my girlfriend wanted to promote via stickers in the local Vietnamese community. From top to bottom the phrases are "Eat Lots of Vegetables," "Save the Earth," and "Think Recycle."
A hand-drawn poster I made for an event in San Diego that featured two rising modern funk artists as well as several respected DJs who specialize in 80s funk music. I had a lot of fun drawing this one and both the artists and promoter loved it!
A poster I designed for a Los Angeles music collective's event in San Diego. They focus heavily on the latin music diaspora and it's many variations both old and new. They wanted something that reflects their upbeat, vibrant music selections.
Drawing of a Hip-Hop pig that I did for a friend. Cazals, gold chain, and shell-toe adidas in effect.
100% Hand-drawn by me and colored in Photoshop. This poster was created for an event in Oakland, CA featuring various established, as well as up-and-coming, DJs / Producers from the Bay Area. The general theme of this event embraces eccentricity, weirdness and just plain fun, so I enjoyed creating this humoristic + somewhat odd design.
This was made for another event in Ho Chi Minh City that brought together some of the top DJs in town for a night to move all aspects of the self. Logo, design, type, and background all done by me.
Promotional material for a monthly event in Ho Chi Minh City that specializes in Slow Jams, R&B, Boogie, and Soul vibes. I did the design & type treatment.
Another installment of design for a regular music event in San Diego (and sometimes San Francisco). The illustration, design and type treatment are all done by yours truly.
This is an event poster that I drew free-hand. I busted out my 2-point perspective skills for the header text design. I drew influence from the 50s/60s motorcycle movie posters. Pen and ink. There will be a limited run of silk-screened prints with this design, using black ink on red paper.
An illustration I did for my good friend, fellow DJ, and all around uniquely awesome person: Marcus. Hand-drawn with pen & paper, then scanned and colored in PS.
The Sweet Cheeks legacy continues. All illustration (hand-drawn then scanned), design, and layout is done by yours truly.
I designed this promotional flyer for an event in Ho Chi Minh City that focused on underground/left-field hip hop and instrumental beats. The promoter wanted a simple, straight-forward design. It was rainy season in Vietnam at the time, and the name of the event coincided with the weather quite literally, so incorporated some of the seasonal influence.
Another installment in the ongoing Sweet Cheeks event series. I drew a new model since I was growing tired of the previous ones and it's NYE, so why not? As with this whole series, I'm responsible for all the drawing, layout, type, and design. More updates in the series coming in future months!
Doo Doo Roo hand-drawn poster (Aug '12) - Another hand-drawn and photoshop-colored poster for an event series in San Diego I work with. My client wanted to incorporate aliens into the weirdness I've been creating for him, so I came up with these odd amphibian/fish/worm creatures beaming light from their third eyes. This series has been super fun and continues to evolve as I explore hand-type letterforms and humorous characters.
Doo Doo Roo hand-drawn poster (May '12) - Another hand-drawn and photoshop-colored poster for an event series in San Diego I work with. I'm really enjoying the process of blending anthropomorphism, hand type, and humor that's a bit off center. My client simply gives word association and leaves the direction/aesthetic in my hands. Each month through this summer I will be making a new poster. YES!
Doo Doo Roo hand-drawn poster - This a poster for a music show in San Diego that I hand-drew and then scanned in to my computer so I could color it in Photoshop. Hadn't drawn something like this in awhile so it felt good making it and people have been responding really well to it. Enjoy!
This is a poster I was contracted to do by Light in the Attic Records in conjunction with Stax (a premier soul/funk music record label). They were celebrating the release of a Stax box set (book + records) and Memphis Record Store Day. I used both pictures from the book and labels of the records included in the box set to create a central collage. This was printed and placed in windows at select record shops and other stores supporting Record Store Day in the Memphis, TN area.
Event Collateral - I was recently commissioned to make a bookmark-style, 'collectible' hand bill for a live electronic / performance art event at The Last Bookstore in downtown LA. I fused the vintage vibe of the bookstore w/ the futuristic nature of the event. It ended up having a retro-space-age feel to it, which the client enjoyed. I did everything as usual: type layout, created the textures, as well as the abstract illustration on the front of the bookmark.
Event Collateral - Event Collateral created for an event put on by DJs playing nothing but vinyl from the 60s-80s. They wanted something warm, funky and obviously related to records. So, I made the stylized illustration of a melting record (the night was called HOT wax after all) and formatted the entire image to look like an album jacket, employing aging effects as well to give it a used/vintage feel.
Updated design for an intimate backyard party series I was hosting for the last two years with some of LA's choice DJs / selectors / beatmakers. As always, I made all the pictorial elements and set the type.
A slight stylistic detour from my normal fare, this poster had a tight deadline so I focused on the type (the logo was provided by the client), a simple triangle illustration I constructed w/ vector masks, and a little love for CMYK. The client didn't give me much direction but loved the final outcome.
A fellow DJ contracted me to make a promotional flyer for an event he was booked at. He wanted something sexy and funky (keywords I use often), so I enlisted some sexy lips found on the web, some timely typefaces, and employed my normal use of delicious color palettes.
Event Web Collateral - I created this for an event a friend of mine was putting on in their backyard. He didn't want the address on the image since, well, it was his own residence and not a venue. Instead he opted to email all of the people who responded via Facebook. I created the entire image/design in Photoshop. Lots of custom texturing. They wanted an underground, funky, slightly old school, summertime feel since there were some talented DJs and beatmakers on the bill. This is what I came up with.
Event Collateral - I designed this flyer front concept for an upcoming event in Downtown LA called Traffic. The night is scheduled to play progressive bass/dance music, so I wanted to give the client something w/ a futuristic slant. I was looking at images from the original 'Tron' film, and also kept seeing the pic of HAL from '2001:Space Odyssey' in my head. This was all the info they wanted on this side. Once I get prints, I'll get photos up of both sides up.
Another iteration in the Sweet Cheeks poster design series. I drew a new girl for this one and switched up the color scheme. Another poster, another girl, and some more fun colors coming for the night's New Year's Eve installment! Stay tuned.
Sweet Cheeks Web Collateral - A continuation of web collateral for a client in San Diego who runs a seasonal, uber-female-friendly, event. I hand drew the model from a photo I had taken of her. I also did all the color, layout, background, etc.
Sweet Cheeks - An illustration and poster design I did for a client in San Diego. I hand-drew the illustration of the woman, gave some custom drip treatment to the display typeface, made the perspective glowing arrow pattern, and arranged all other elements. 100% done by yours truly.
Music Event Promotional Material - I made this for a rising electronic music event, Critical Beatdown, in San Diego. They booked the established SA-RA Creative Partners aka Shafiq Husayn & Om'Mas Keith. Their music can best be described as future funk/soul with a sexual undercurrent. The only asset to work with was a plain black & white version of the SA-RA logo. Everything else is built from scratch (aside from the font, duh). Both the promoter and Om'Mas Keith were very pleased w/ the product.
Album Release Party Flyer - I did this for a client in San Diego. They wanted something similar to the opening credits on 'Catch Me If You Can.' I matched the typefaces as best as possible and combined custom textures with vector masks to create a vintage-inspired background image.
Cartoon Character for a Comcast commercial - I was contracted by a production company to come up with a cartoon hybrid animal, a snoth (sloth + snail), for a nationally broadcast Comcast commercial. They wanted isolated character images, an alternate version of the hybrid, as well as what the creature would look like being lazy in it's environment. These were all hand-drawn, scanned, and colored in Photoshop.
