Boardhouse :: Skatepark & Youth Center

SPATIAL PARTI :: Rhythm & Resistance
The spatial parti of BoardHouse recognizes the rigid rhythm of the existing
structure while turning against it, similar to the oblique relationship between
skate culture and mainstream society.
.
CONCEPT :: Reappropriation
Similar to the manner in which skaters reinterpret functional objects as skating opportunities, the design of BoardHouse allows the building shell to remain intact and considers the pre-established regiment of the garage perforations and 24’ truss depth as design opportunities. The design reinterprets shapes and figures established by the urban streetscape (and later skatepark constructions) into an aesthetic form language that creates a visually dynamic “skatescape” of halfpipes from above, with consciously-crafted structures to be experienced from the underbelly.
