Market Opportunity Chart - This is just one slide of my research that address opening in the current market. I used the colored dots to indicate how many products that particular company had in Markets in a variety of wattage power.
Target Markets - There are 3 Target Markets Identified: Emergency: Disaster relief...Interview Katrina Victims Recreational: Interviewed Tailgaters, Campers Professional: Interviewed Construction Workers
Project Objectives - I selected to work in the Recreational Market. The current technology that Generac used is basically and Internal Combustion engine. This is much louder that Inverter technology that that some competitors are using but the price difference is drastic. Keeping with the motto of offering affordable power I recognized and opportunity to Market this Generator to a car loving & power hungry consumer. It would feature a tuned exhaust, car styling, & a "beefy" interface
Exploration sketches - The new generator would expand on their recently released XP model incorporating the same color scheme. After studying car images I found that the front grill and use of a large side mounted muffler crucial to the styling. It was also a challenge to balance a smooth shape and incorporate many grip aces points (Research showed lack of grab bars was top reason for frustration when loading/moving) Note: These images are hand sketched in Prisma color pencil and rendered w/ photoshop on the Wycom.
Selected Sketch - This was the selected concept by the Generac Team. Featuring large wheels with thin rubbers reminiscent of sports cars. The angled orange cover was to give a predominant profile and provide additional cooling airflow to the engine.
Blue Foam Model - This was the selected concept by the Generac Team. Featuring large wheels with thin rubbers reminiscent of sports cars. The angled orange cover was to give a predominant profile and provide additional cooling airflow to the engine.
Original 3-D Model - This is the initial 3-D model using Rhino and rendered in Hypershot (love the speed of this program)! Materials used would be a steel gas tank and sides to protect the engine. All this is supported by the bent metal structure. It also has injection molded details: fenders, grips, heavy duty switches.
Model Construction
Advertisment - This was a conceptual Advertisement. The use of black and white photography really makes the Generator pop out as the only color in the scene. The detail shots on the right are taken of the actual prototype model. The handles are ergonomically designed and are large in size for use with gloves (tied back to research). The angled hood went away but in its place are rivets securing the side panels. The race inspired gauges show: Run time left, Wattage, and Gas Level.
