The Magnetic Clothes Hangers was my final year university industrial design project (My portfolio on my website shows the whole design process). My aim was to create something that was based around new interactions rather than just style; a product that would reflect my goal of changing perceptions of how to use everyday products. The concept of the Magnetic Clothes Hangers allows for the hanging of clothes in space dictated by the size of a metal plane rather than a linear rail. This changes the way we store clothes, from a static space to an interactive space where the user has the flexibility to hang their clothes in a neat or random pattern. For retail spaces it means that the interior can be continuously modified to suite the needs of the forever changing stock. In the home the user no longer has to hide their clothes in a wardrobe but can create a wardrobe from metal objects found in the house or anywhere where they feel like suspending a metal surface (whether that is over the bed or in the hallway). The Magnetic Clothes Hangers changes a process and a method that we have used for many years into something that allows people to explore where normally they would not have. Details: The Hangers are currently hand made. The main body is made from laser cut 3mm powdercoated steel and the hanging mechanism is an earth magnet that has been moulded onto the main body with rubber. The hanging area (wardrobe) is simply made from powdercoated steel. This allows for a variety of shapes, from zig zags to rectangles. The design is readily adaptable for mass production and a range of clothes hangers can be designed to suite different clothes needs.
