Bon Iver - Created this poster for Jagjaguawar recording artist Bon Iver based on on his song "Creature Fear." Poster was packaged with the vinyl release of For Emma Forever Ago and sold at concerts.
Inverse So True E.P. - I was contacted by Tunji of Inverse to create the art work for his hip-hop groups latest E.P. The only request was that the art represent a laid back Cali feel. That direction paired with listening to their music brought me to the solution below. You can download the E.P. for free from here.
Yes Yes Y'all - November 4th 2008 marked a historic day in Americas history as well as the anniversary of Yes Yes Y'all. As a celebration of both we put together a podcast of our collective favorite tracks of the day and then asked Producer Geebz to put it all together for us. Then we reached out to various musicians and asked for original tracks for our first album release. I was responsible for the cover designs and the PDF booklet we gave away with the package.
Dert CMYK E.P. - I was asked by my friend Dert to create art for the CMYK E.P. that will be released later this year. He gave me free reign so I put the E.P. on repeat and went where it took me.
Barack Rock - I was invited to create a cover for the Barack Rock.org Barack Rock was a movement of musicians and artists creating an ever-expanding catalogue of free, exclusive songs, each with its own individual art, meant to inspire participation and donations for the Obama Campaign. An artist was given a track created by a musician or a band and would then make art work for that single.
the Rip Off Artists - I was contacted by the Rip Off Artists to art direct their album art work. I used image stills from the video shoot of the single What Just Happened. The music lead me in a "French Film Noir" direction. I wanted to update that look and exhibit restraint with the typography. This art recently won Best CD Packaging & Artwork category in 88Nine Radio Milwaukee Music Awards.
Vienna Ball Invite - Vienna Ball is a client of JWD-Creative. I have had the pleasure of designing the last two invites for the organization. This was printed with Gold & Silver metallic ink.
Dert Talk Strange Album - I was asked by Dert to create art work for his beat album based on various samples by Björk that dropped on New Years Day. Again I had free reign and let the music lead me until the cover felt right.
Graniph T-shirts - When I was young and the Wonder Years was on I had a crush on Winnie Copper. This is an ode to young love. This shirt will be released by Graniph sometime this year.
the Drill Bike - The Drill Bike is the project of Tim Schneider of The Shop. The name pretty much says it all. Coordinated by Dan Koller, Creative Direction and photography by Aaron Valentine, and Art Direction and Design by me. Created at JWD-Creative. This project is a winner of a 2009 Bell Awards.
Jess - My wife asked me to create a logo and some supporting materials for her. I wanted her business cards to be striking and memorable. I also wanted the flexibility to make significant changes to color on future runs of her cards and supporting materials in order to update her "look" without changing the core of her visual identity system.
TypeCon 2008 - This poster was created while at the JWD-Creative studio for the TypeCon 2008 show. I played with the phrase "Let's Begin By Letting Go." I redrew the typeface Pistilli Roman in Adobe Illustrator because I couldn't find a digital version of the typeface.
JWD-Creatve Rebrand - The design studio I work for went through a name and identity change. I was given the opportunity to create and visually reposition the studio and its outlook. When doing this I paid respect to Jack White who started the studio in '94, by digitizing a type face he created. I then used this digital version of the type for the JWD-Creatve wordmark. I also wanted to give potential clients a look at who we are, a young, energetic, colorful group of uniquely qualified individuals.
Wisconsin Right To Life - Was contracted by Milwaukee based ad agency Nonbox to art direct outdoor campaign for their client Wisconsin Right to Life.
Typography/Logos - A selection of various custom and altered typographic treatments and logos.
Je M'aime - I was recently contacted by New York Music Producer Nire to create a wordmark for a mixtape she is releasing at the launch party for her new jewelery line Je M'aime.
Creating Customer Love Book Cover - I was commissioned, by local advertising agency Nonbox, to create a book cover for Creating Customer Love by Dave Ratner. This book will be released sometime this year.
Kiungo Book Project - I was tasked with creating a vessel to hold the amazing images of Africa. I challenged myself to create a grid that allowed me to provide the important information with a whisper while highlighting the photography. I really enjoyed being apart of this project. It wouldn't be right if I didn't say thank you to my Creative Director Aaron Valentine who allowed me to take on a project that I care so deeply about.
Nver Bland Promotion - Never Bland is a promotional campaign for JWD-Creative that honestly introduces who we are as a studio; small but potent. We are currently working on new material for this campaign.
the Marma Spot - This is a project that started back in late '04 as a way for me to pick the brains of artists and designers I respected. I didn't just want to interview these people, I wanted to have a conversation with them about their process, their experience, and their outlook. I wanted to share this information with anyone willing to read it. For me it was an amazing way to learn more about being creative.
Whats The Science Blog - This is another blog I was hired to creative direct. I wanted this to have a similar feel to the D.J. KO Blog as far as function was concerned but I wanted to change up the form a bit. Again I turned the design over to friend and programmer Benjamin Gray of The World All Around he programmed it to run off of wordpress so that the updates would be easy and painless. You can visit the site here.
D.J. KO Blog Design - I was asked to design a blog that was well organized and easily updatable. I challenged myself to put the focus on the content while keeping structural integrity between sections. I then turned the design over to friend and programmer Benjamin Gray of The World All Around he programmed it to run off of wordpress so that the updates would be easy and painless.
Urb Magazine - I was asked to add graphic elements to photos of Jay-Z as well as customize typography for an article that ran in the magazine.
