Job Description

The College of Design at North Carolina State University seeks applicants for a full-time, 5-year faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice with a focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Design scholarship and K-12 outreach.

The Design Lab (DLab; is dedicated to teaching design as a way of thinking and delivering design experiences to benefit the K-12 community. The DLab is committed to exposing K-12 underserved/ underrepresented minority students (US/URM) to design careers, to Design as a profession, and to the College of Design for their education. Offerings have included immersive design camps, workshops, field trips, and programming for K-12 teachers and counselors.

Primary duties of the Assistant / Associate Professor of Practice include:
• Directing the Design Lab (DLab) in a fiscally responsible, mission focused and inclusive manner.
• Teaching courses on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in design education and design pedagogy for non-collegiate students.
• Engaging with and mentoring graduate and doctoral students from multiple disciplines to work with and through the DLab.
• Engaging faculty from all departments with the DLab programming.
• Providing leadership in DEI endeavors internal to the College.
• Actively participating in scholarship and outreach in the areas of recruitment of US/URM (including BIPOC and LGBTQ+) K-12 students to design and diversity in design as well as obtaining external funding to support it.

This position will have a dual report to the Associate Dean of the College and to their home department head.

Minimum Education and Experience:
A terminal degree (M/MFA/PhD or DDes) in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Art and Design, Industrial Design, or Graphic Design from an accredited (recognized equivalent) university completed by August 31, 2021. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor of the Practice requires an established record of teaching and funded, published DEI scholarship.

Required qualifications:
• Experience planning and delivering K-12 outreach activities.
• Experience developing courses or curriculum.
• Participating in outreach to US/URM (including BIPOC and LGBTQ+) students.
• Engaged in building a diverse and inclusive community culture.
• 2 years experience working as a designer or teaching design.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience managing multiple K-12 outreach activities including knowledge and application of regulations associated with programming for minors and managing budget and staff
• Two years of teaching experience in their design field (or related profession) and knowledge of Beginning

Design Pedagogy.
• One–two years experience as a professional designer.
• Experience mentoring students.
• Record of active participation in professional organizations.
• Grounded in contemporary design concepts, principles, practices, methods and tools across a range of media.
• Conversant with emerging technologies.

The work schedule will be Monday- Fri (8 am - 5pm) with flexibility to address teaching and outreach activities delivered outside of traditional business hours. This is a 12-month position which is leave earning eligible. Salary commensurate with experience (range $55,000 - $65,000). Since this is a fixed term professional faculty position the duration of the appointment is limited to a max of 5 years, initial contract then up to 5 years during the subsequent contract(s).

The Design Lab Director will hold a professional faculty appointment at the appropriate professional faculty rank of Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice in one of the four departments in the college (Architecture, Art and Design, Graphic & Industrial Design and Landscape Architecture). The professional faculty rank will be determined based on the successful candidate's education background and/or degree of study.
