Job Description

Workman Publishing’s children’s department is growing! We’re a small, creative, collaborative team of editors and designers focused on creating innovative nonfiction for children ages 0–14. We ideate books ranging from board books to complex novelty formats to graphic novels. We’re looking for a Design Assistant to help us track projects and develop books from the idea stage to prepping files for the printer. This is an entry-level position with a lot of growth potential.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

-You’re an organized, detail-oriented designer
-You’re a team player who can work independently and collaboratively
-You have strong communication skills
-You’re excited to learn more about developing children’s books, design, and illustration

What you’ll do:

-Support the design department with layout assistance
-Help research illustrators for new projects
-Track incoming art and schedules
-Make art corrections in Illustrator and Photoshop
-Check and package files for the printer
-Participate in our weekly team meeting to brainstorm new books

Qualifications:

-This is an entry-level position. Previous industry experience is welcome but not required.
-BFA degree in design or a related field
-A portfolio that shows great design and type skills—hand-lettering and illustration skills are a big plus.
-Intermediate skill level in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
