We are looking for a Design Director to join the team here at Prime Studio in NYC and help drive our future growth. This is an exciting new position and we are looking for someone who is passionate about bringing design excellence to market and has over 10 years of experience doing so. The Design Director will work directly with our Founder and Creative Director, Stuart Harvey Lee, to define our vision, manage our team and deliver design excellence for our clients. This role will involve managing multiple projects across a range of disciplines including industrial design, packaging design and brand development. Whilst this role straddles disciplines a strong background in Industrial design is essential.
If this job description has you excited and you have demonstrable experience then we’d love to hear from you
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We work in a wide variety of markets including housewares, travel, personal care, fashion and consumer products and our worldwide roster of clients range from multi-national FMCG companies to disruptive startups so you should have a varied design background and strong concept, creation, craft and presentation skills.
A key part of this role is to inspire and lead the creative team so demonstrable team leadership and motivation skills are absolutely essential. In addition this is a highly visible outward facing role so you should be comfortable in managing client relationships and discussing business opportunities with current or new clients.
Great communication skills - you will be leading complex projects with heavy hitter clients so you should be proficient in articulating the strategic reasons for a design direction as well as the creative ones.
An understanding of how to take projects from inception through completion. The job requires strategic planning, visionary storytelling and an understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes and materials.
You should have your finger on the pulse of trends in fashion, personal care and technology and a strong knowledge and interest in the startup scene.
YOU SHOULD HAVE
10+ years of experience with at least half of those in an agency environment.
A wide ranging portfolio with proven experience in Industrial Design, Graphics and Brand Development.
Top-notch Solidworks skills and a deep understanding of the nuances of DFM. We work with our clients all the way through product launch so you must be well-versed in liaising with vendors throughout the development process to ensure our desired design intent and quality standards are met.
Experience in project planning and estimating project resource needs for proposals and resourcing.
A Bachelors or Masters degree in Industrial design or a closely related discipline.
Currently we are working 3 days a week (Tues/Wed/Thurs) in our midtown studio and are remote on Mondays and Fridays (optional). This is not a remote position so the ability to work with the team in person at our studio is required.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU
You’ll partner with global clients and exciting, disruptive startups and lead the design process from start to launch, working on a wide variety of projects across multiple categories and disciplines.
As a strong personality you’ll manage client relationships and have an influence in new business meetings.
You’ll be integral in defining the future of Prime Studio both by helping identify and close new business opportunities but also by being a key mentor to our creative team and actively involved in recruiting top talent.
You’ll be working for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your dream and push creative boundaries, elevating every brand and project put in front of you.
Compensation will be commensurate with experience and role fit.
We offer a 401K retirement plan with automatic 3% safe harbor contributions from Prime Studio.
We have a tiered healthcare plan to allow you to choose the plan that best for your needs.
We have a generous vacation policy.
Please submit your application to firstname.lastname@example.org which should include your resume, portfolio highlights (including your role in the project), an explanation of why you think you'd be a good fit for this position and your vision for it. Please also include your desired salary range.
