As a Design Director in Carelon’s Health Platform’s design group you’ll bring your design, visioning and storytelling skills to lead a team of designers to work with, conceive of, craft and ship cohesive and compelling designs for the next generation of data-driven, precision medicine tools for healthcare professionals, practices, and patients. Our goal is to design the next generation of tools that not only improve outcomes for our members but become trusted by clinicians and physicians.

You should love to dive deep into new spaces - researching your users’ needs, workflows, motivations and how things work in their realities. You equally love to explore a wide range of concepts, collaborating with teammates to quickly iterate, validate and refine ideas together. You have a track record of working in diverse environments and, ideally on successful early-stage projects. You must be comfortable working with projects that are evolving quickly and are not fully specified. Ideally you have experience working with clinicians.

You’ll partner with our data and social scientists, product managers, clinical specialists, and engineers, to establish a strategic design vision and experiential values for the products and experiences your team designs. Tactically, you’ll work across our organization to ensure users’ needs are clearly understood and defined, and ensure the product and/or service flow, visual design, interaction design and overall end-to-end experiences cohesively add value for our users, and the respective business needs.

We are looking for a Design Director to work remotely but accessible to our Chicago or Atlanta Office for collaboration.

Primary responsibilities:

Leads and supports a team of designers on a product or service from initial problem definition through to final polishing, tuning and shipping. This includes leading the creative efforts for your team, helping establish a clear vision for where the work is headed and working to consistently deliver cohesive, engaging and appropriate experiences that strike the ever-elusive balance between world-class quality, time and budget while meeting the business and user objectives for your respective product(s).

This will include, but is not limited to:

Early-stage discovery and initial research, problem definitions, and developing creative briefs, project constraints and scope, and identification of user research need
For a business or product line, establishing the visual direction along with complete and cohesive end-to-end experiences are developed that drive new user acquisition and high retention.
Ensuring the work of your team is of highest possible production and experiential values, regardless of time and budget constraints
Work with our Design, UR and project leadership to identify the expertise and resource needs (e.g.; HCI, Ixd, UR, Product Design, Graphic), risks and dependencies for your project. Proactively advocate for your team and project as these needs may evolve. Partner with team and project leadership on management of project schedules and resource planning.
Work closely with User Research to ensure your team has a full picture of the user’s needs, aspirations and challenges, and constantly seek to surpass those needs.
Set the standard for and grow your team’s design craft by demonstrating how that elevates the user experiences we deliver. This includes developing and growing the design craft of the people on your team, beyond pure career development ladders.
Conduct frequent and regular critiques with clear and actionable feedback to your team
Provide career counselling; identify area(s) of growth for core craft skills and identify pathways for development
Proactively mentor designers across the organization and demonstrate strong design leadership by example across Carelon and Elevance Health.
Assist with recruiting of design staff
Develop and manage relationships with product managers/business owners and key stakeholders inside and outside of the organization.

You must have at least 15 years of experience designing and developing highly engaging products and/or services for consumer or healthcare products -and- at least 2 years’ experience as a design leader for complex products, services and/or large design teams with complex dependencies. The ideal candidate’s product or products with high retention rates, ideally with consumer experience and live operations. Your portfolio shows you’ve shipped world class, engaging, successful end-to-end experiences with strong narratives, on multiple platforms (desktop, mobile, game consoles, etc.), including some native iOS and/or Android apps. Your portfolio demonstrates great design craft from initial problem definition, to research and exploration thru to final design detailing.

The ideal portfolio/reel/body of work shows you have:

Demonstrated design leadership as either a design leader, design director, creative director, design strategist with enterprise experience (either as an employed design leader or as a client) working with interaction or industrial designers, service designers, brand or graphic designers, user researchers and product managers. This includes the ability to visually define the complete creative direction of a large project while meeting the business needs of the project.

Great foundational design skills around flow, context and rhythm with strong analog (e,g.; pen and paper) prototyping methods. They may be based in either:

Traditional visual, product or service design (e.g., layout, composition, typography, color, form, motion, etc.) -or-

Design strategy (e.g., facilitation of interdisciplinary groups that lead to business impact/business case development, strategic planning, design and/or product lifecycles planning, etc)., - or

Interaction or User research-oriented (e.g., HCI, user research, information hierarchy, behavioral sciences, etc.)

You must be comfortable working with various types of data and have the ability to define success metrics. The ability to visualize your ideas clearly without a computer is essential. You must have demonstrable mastery in presenting complex visual information with awareness for different user types

You are a standards bearer for a key design subdiscipline such as layout, form, flow, interaction mechanics, gestures, storytelling, design strategy, ecosystems, HCI, etc.

A deep and wide toolbox of investigation, research, ideation, visualization and problem-solving tools. This includes strong rapid visualization skills for quickly generating, iterating and visually pitching your ideas as concept sketches, storyboards, etc., even if you are not from a traditional designer career path. This includes having superb presentation and storytelling skills and knowing when to work at the appropriate level of fidelity (thumbnailing, sketching, wireframing, designing and polishing).

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Product, Industrial or Systems Design, Design Strategy, HCI, Cognitive Psychology or equivalent from an accredited program. Experience in B2B environments, healthcare or other regulated sectors, is a plus, but so is experience in rich emotionally driven consumer interfaces such as game design, theme park design, location-based entertainment, or high-end retail.

A sense of humor. This work is hard, but playfulness is a crucial ingredient to great design work.

You must reside in the USA and the ideal candidate will be located within commuting distance of Chicago or Atlanta for when we return to in-person work.
