Pentland Brands are looking for a technically minded industrial designer who has a focus on creating amazing, innovative product solutions to important human-centric problems in the outdoor and sports industries.
This role will be part of the footwear and equipment innovation team, working on projects for Berghaus and Speedo, with a particular focus on reducing the environmental impact of our products and creating circular product systems.
You’d be responsible for performing product and consumer research to really get under the skin of the problems that our consumer’s face and trend research to understand the world in which our products exist in.
You’d then work with the rest of the team to ideate new solutions, starting with many ideas and narrowing down as you test and learn, using your ability to visualize these concepts.
Finally, this role would be responsible for creating prototypes to turn the ideas into reality. Starting rough and developing in complexity. You’d be using your CAD skills to design prototypes and working with our technical teams to use rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing to bring them to life
Responsibilities: Research and exploration of consumer problems, trends and technologies, Problem solving - Ideation and concept development as part of a team. Testing of ideas with the support of the research and testing team by talking to consumers or using lab based tests, creation of rough, visual and physical prototypes, working with our brands teams, external partners and agencies to manage ongoing projects, presentation of projects at key milestones with the rest of the team.
Desired skills: Experience in producing leading edge industrial design, proven ability to generate innovative conceptual ideas based on consumer problems, technology, trends, data and research findings. Strong sketching ability to develop initial concepts and share with internal teams, an ability to use rough paper or foam prototypes to represent ideas, proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (or similar) and 3D CAD design tools (SolidWorks, Rhino or similar) to explore and present design concepts and clearly define design intent. Experience in application of standard office computer programs
Needs to be: Creatively minded, not just at work, but in their everyday life, a design thinker with a desire to solve human-centered problems.Comfortable with challenging the norm, a tinkerer, at home in front of a computer or in a workshop. A collaborative, team player, approachable and friendly, easy to build strong personal relationships. Passionate and knowledgeable about sustainability.
A desire to become an accomplished designer, willingness to explore outside of their comfort zone and to learn new things. Good interpersonal skills, diplomatic and persuasive.

This role is part of the UK Kickstarter Scheme.
25 hours per week (3 days) for a total of 6 months.
Working days to be agreed when appointed.
