Title: Senior Industrial Designer
Location: Either Carlsbad, CA or Irvine, CA
If you are a passionate design visionary who wants to unleash your creative skills and you yearn to make an impact from a senior position within a fast-paced company on a skyrocketing trajectory, we want to hear from you!
We are searching for an exceptionally talented, motivated and experienced Senior Industrial Designer who will manage industrial design efforts and work closely across disciplines to drive the ideation, design, specification and implementation of all Arlo products. Our top candidate must have an informed design perspective, strong ambition, and a desire to work in a dynamic and entrepreneurial company. You will be instrumental in influencing, refining and implementing our design language and product DNA. You will help lead the charge as we innovate and expand into new products and categories. The role reports to the SVP of Design & Experience.
To be considered as a candidate, you must have a keen intellect and the ability to learn new things quickly. You must be able to work effectively in a constantly changing environment and know how to adapt to these changes gracefully. Even with things in flux, you maintain your focus and have excellent follow-through skills to complete all tasks skillfully and on time. You are friendly, easy to work with, and passionate about creating cutting edge products and experiences. The leader we seek is passionate about design and usability, extremely articulate, meticulous and detail focused.
This is a hands-on position requiring the ability to drive your own projects while concurrently working on a multitude of design efforts. You can communicate ideas and concepts visually, doing whatever it takes to get products to market on time – including sketching, CAD modeling and rendering, mock up creation, partner management and production follow through. You’ll work very closely with our mechanical engineering, user experience, product marketing, hardware, operations, manufacturing and executive leadership teams. Candidates must demonstrate a balance of both creative and analytical aptitude, as well as exceptional visual talent, instinct and problem-solving skills and the ability to work with sometimes ambiguous and shifting requirements.
Manage the creative process from ideation through completion, leveraging a mastery of holistic, human centered design principles to elevate design as a leadership discipline within the company.
Translate marketing objectives into clear creative strategies, by synthesizing input from management, sales, engineering and development partners to design and refine products from concept to mass production.
Follow through and sweat the smallest details, solve challenges and champion and enforce design intent.
Participate in and translate consumer & ethnographic insights into design opportunities. Understand user behavior as it relates to design and have a passion for creating beautiful and meaningful experiences.
Assume ownership of projects, working without close supervision, while balancing multiple concurrent projects.
Facilitate project communication across a multidisciplinary team through all phases of projects.
Make and take constructive criticism while maintaining a sense of humor and a balanced perspective.
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in ID/Product Design, 8-10 years of industrial design experience (with at least 3-4 years leading projects) preferably in fast-moving, high-volume consumer electronics or consumer goods companies.
Demonstrated project leadership, motivation and the ability to provide constructive feedback and direction to both internal and external team members.
Fluidly move from strategy and design direction to hands-on, ‘in the tools’ development.
Demonstrated mastery of 2D and 3D tools of the trade (Solidworks, Rhino, ProE, Keyshot, Adobe CS, etc.).
Persuasively and assertively sell ideas and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders via excellent visual, written and verbal communication skills and solid rationale.
Extensive knowledge and experience related to process capabilities and limitations within the world of electrical and mechanical engineering and high volume overseas manufacturing.
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, with strong initiative and follow through. Excellent project management and prioritization skills, paying meticulous attention to detail, while not losing sight of the big picture.
Embrace a hands-on development and learning approach, using frequent prototyping for validation and user studies.
Work under tight deadline pressure and adapt quickly and amicably to changes in project, scope and schedule.
Able to travel domestically and internationally, up to 20%.
