In our highly automated, fast-paced labs, manual pipetting is a thing of the past. We build open-source lab robotics, cutting edge diagnostic tests, and the world’s first full-cycle solutions for no-code AI and genome-scale synthetic biology.
Our teams are dedicated to working smarter by developing a platform that integrates robotics, software, assay development, and lab operations to supercharge the pace of innovation in life sciences. Through our continuous R&D efforts, we are extending this platform for the detection of diverse human pathogens, providing unprecedented accessibility for clinically actionable information to improve human health.
To be a world-class innovator at the intersection of science and technology, we strive to be a place where diverse teams can come together to do their finest work. Ideally, people who are passionate, collaborative, and who truly want to work together to make a difference.
The sky's the limit when it comes to the positive impacts that our work can have on humanity, and it all starts with nurturing the development of our own employees. We provide excellent benefits, competitive compensation, equity packages, and endless opportunities for growth.

About the Role
The Senior Product Designer is an experienced designer who solves complex scientific and automation problems. In 2022, the Design team is focused on two main areas: unifying our software and supporting new hardware releases.
With Product and Engineering as partners, this Senior Product Designer is focused on unifying our software and owns the execution of this area’s cross-functional initiatives. The first project this person will tackle is to redesign the Opentrons Protocol Library.
The Opentrons Design org reports directly to the General Manager.
Solve problems by gaining alignment with stakeholders, creating workflows and wireframes that communicate possible solutions, and collaborating with Engineering to ensure the team’s approaches are buildable
Partnering with Engineering and Product leads:
• Define what design work is needed for an initiative
• Break the work down into manageable pieces and collaborate with others to work towards a solution
• Create, share and present your work in a clear and concise way (utilizing user flows, annotated wireframes and prototypes)
• Conduct user research and usability tests to incorporate user feedback during the design and development process
• Shepherd the initiative to launch, making the right compromises to balance the ideal user experience with the realities of hardware and software development
Opentrons Design uses Figma, Jira, Confluence and GSuite as our primary tools, and we are always assessing new ones to enhance our workflows
5+ years shipping work at startups for SaSS and/or hardware products
Experience collaborating with User Researchers and mentoring other Designers
A history of collaboratively creating new experiences that push the boundaries of what exists today
A demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into strategic, incremental and user-centered solutions that connect to long-term business goals
A strong portfolio that demonstrates proficiency in user experience design: a clear understanding of usability heuristics and design principles, how to execute on them, and ability to communicate design intentions to collaborators
Prior experience with complex scientific, engineering or other technical software/hardware a plus
