Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt) is seeking candidates for full-time, tenure track and/or permanent part-time faculty at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the Industrial Design Department beginning fall of 2020.

MassArt is the oldest, and one of two public, state supported, independent colleges of art and design in the country. In this urgent time, MassArt prioritizes the teaching of sustainability in art and design and defines it as addressing and solving problems at the intersection of social justice, health, and the environment.

MassArt's Industrial Design undergraduate program empowers students to become creative, holistic problem solvers who impact our society through the development of meaningful, relevant designed products and experiences. By employing a user-centered design and iterative approach to exploring ideas, students utilize empathic integration of social and functional needs when considering materials and manufacturing options for concept development. Visual and verbal communication skills are a hallmark of the program, allowing our students to understand and pragmatically convey the value of design to business, communities and people.

The program utilizes a hands-on approach to thinking and making with designated resources and studio spaces for students to learn and develop best practices. It is well connected to a vibrant design community, influential alumni, and several universities in Boston providing students exposure to industry based projects and opportunities to learn in multidisciplinary design teams. The faculty recognizes and values diverse practices, from client-driven to self-authored, and from the artifactual to work grounded in process and experiences.

The ideal candidate will show evidence of accomplishment in product and/or industrial design practice, as well as teaching and/or mentoring abilities, that will engage a diverse body of students to excel in: the general philosophy and mastery of process, communicating ideas with a deeper sense of connection to the designed experience- storytelling, and engaging with critical discourse, cultural history, and/or creative and social issues.

We are seeking colleagues that are thought leaders with an interdisciplinary approach to their design practice and teaching philosophy. They will have an aesthetic sensibility, strong technical skills in the realm of the design profession, fluency with the latest technology, a firm grasp of contemporary professional practices and methodologies, and possess a vision of the future regarding the nature of the profession and design education.

Faculty in the ID undergraduate program are also provided opportunities to teach in the Masters of Design Innovation (MDes) program. The MDes program is a two-year program that integrates design practice and business discipline with an emphasis on leadership. It is

intended for those who want to lead the design and planning of new products, services, environments, systems, and organizations.

The successful applicant will also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as a history of working with broadly diverse communities.
