In India, traditional cookware and servingware items are referred to as "vessels" and their designs have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
The goal of Vessels was to guide students in manipulating the profile of the classic vessel form to achieve an "updated" look without impacting the function, quite necessary to the cooking and serving of traditional Indian cuisine.
Workshop participants altered the traditional vessel profile on paper, then transferred their designs to rigid sheet material.
The profiles were then cut from the sheet material and refined with files and sandpaper to achieve a smooth edge.
The finished profiles were mounted on a lathe device and the ensuing 3D model was created by applying wet plaster and turning it against the profile.
In industry, these finished models can be used as samples for making production molds and technical drawings, they can help facilitate communication between designer and manufacturer or can serve as props for making presentations and proposals for new product development.
