Transgender Day of Remembrance (2014)

Every year, the Penn LGBT Center observes Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) on November 20th, which memorializes those who have bee murdered because of transphobia. TDoR exists to raise awareness of the ongoing violence against those in the transgender community, all over the world.

For 2014, I helped the Penn LGBT Center design a formal memorial installation in their second-floor library. The names of victims that were reported via media (many of these crimes never get reported) were handwritten on papers of different color, with each color representing a region of the world. On the day of TDoR that year, LGBT Center staff and members of the University of Pennsylvania community -- students, faculty, law enforcement, counselors, professors, etc. -- gathered for a brief talk and moment of mourning. This installation was on display for several months after TDoR.
