Sabbath - Rest + Prayer Space : Interior Design

The design of Sabbath is intended to be a space for prayer and rest that resides near or on a university campus in the city. Sabbath is defined as: to sit still; repose; tranquility; a state of rest. These words are the driving force of the concept for Sabbath, as it will be an environment that provides space for relaxing, reflecting, reading and writing, and rejuvenating / refocusing. Through the use of natural materials such as reclaimed walnut and oak hardwood, water, and greenery the atmosphere will be bright yet peaceful. Open and enclosed furniture will be juxtaposed to offer a variety of seating for different uses. Clean lines with soothing tones from nature will allow the water feature to be most impactful, reducing stress. Each designated area will move visitors closer towards their goals, whether their desires involve healing, restoring, or connecting better with God. Sabbath will be a nontraditional daily retreat that embodies the purpose of a sanctuary, to draw in students.
