Individual Explorations
Collaboration of Phase One behind Ted Mann Concert Hall
The concept of graduation led the independent designs.
Subterranean structure created by combining voided spaces from the volumetric stage.

The four entrances emphasize the various chambers within while the main room acts as the focal point.
The single passageway presents the most intriguing spaces and encourages continuous movement, contradicting the initial intent of the design.

This was a semester long exploration of creating structures from simple materials: paper, wire, and volumetric space. At the end of each design phase, the components created by each group member were combined to create a cohesive whole, eventually culminating in an underground inhabitable structure.
The chosen site was behind Ted Mann Concert Hall on the University of Minnesota West Bank. Not much utilized, the purpose was to draw people into this “hideaway” and into the subterranean space. With this in mind, one large room was designed as the intended “hang out” spot. However, it soon became clear that it was less about people staying in this predetermined location and more about moving through it.
