Set in between the natural landscapes of both Lake Michigan and a ravine, the Sawyer Residence is meant as a summer retreat for the owners and their family. The house is situated to take advantage of the natural landscape, views, and existing trees on the site. The material palette is also kept simple and naturalistic with burnt wood Kebony cladding encapsulating the upper level and board form concrete walls on the lower level. The house is meant to be modest and of its place, leaving a light touch on the site while keeping the landscaping natural. The house will also serve as an energy efficent and sustainable home with a solar pv array on the roof, 3 backup batteries for solar harvesting, triple pane energy efficient windows and a tight insulated envelope.
