The picture above shows a young man wearing a Reefer or pea jacket dated to around 1860. The Reefer Jacket was characterized by their double-breasted cut with wide lapels, and were popular among sailors. The length of the jacket varied and often the length of the coat was used to show higher status in the navy. They were worn as overcoats during the day.
