History of Costume Illustrated Digital Vocabulary List CH15

The trench coat was designed during WWI for the British army, specifically the navy, because it was made using a material called gabardine which was invented by Thomas Burberry. The material was a weatherproof twill that remained breathable because instead of coating the whole fabric with lanolin, each individual strand was coated before the material was woven. After the war, trench coats became popular as everyday wear TOP COATS for men.
