Greetings From Mr. Bird Editorial Illustration - This editorial illustration was done for Utne Reader. The article was on civility... with a subhead that reads "Be civil, or I'll beat you to a pulp." The piece goes on to discuss the state of modern day civility (or lack thereof). Editorial Illustration The Patient Tree Hermit - This was a piece I did for lawrence.com's last printed Deadwood Edition... sadly it is moved to an online only publication like many others. I really had a great time researching the character for this one and the title of the article hints at this as well, "Lawrence's Original Weirdo - Hugh Cameron: Tree Hermit, Philosopher, and Civil War Veteran" Limited edition archival prints available here http://www.rawtoastdesign.com/store/the%20patient%20tree%20hermit/index.htm
Johns Hopkins Nursing Magazine - This was from a series of illustrations done for Johns Hopkins Nursing Magazine. The main themes were the idea of exploration, problem solving, and often the necessity to see things from a different perspective for proper diagnosis within the nursing community. This image was used for the cover

Unlikely Lovers Editorial Illustration - This was a cover that I did for the lawrence.com Nature & Technology Issue. This image/idea was the first thing to come to me and I just couldn't get the idea of a robot tree waltz out of my head. Limited edition archival prints available here http://www.rawtoastdesign.com/store/unlikely%20lovers/index.htm
Efficient Roads - Illo for 417 Magazine about a new "green" interchange. The interchange, called a diverging diamond, was the first of its kind in the United States. The new overpass leads drivers on a path that—while it is quick and easy once you get the hang of it—sends them driving on the left side of the road, a first for most American motorists. The diverging diamond allows more than twice as many left turns per hour than most interchanges—a total of about 600 turns.
The Unwritten Letters Project - This was an illustration that was done for the March issue of St. Louis Magazine, titled "Reading Other People's Mail." The Unwritten Letters Project - unwrittenlettersproject.com - is a platform for people to post something they've written or always wanted to say, anonymously, for the whole world to see.
Hope Is The New Fear Editorial Illustration - This was the cover illustration done for the printed newsstand edition of lawrence.com. It was commissioned for the feature article about a professor who practices and teaches “positive psychology,” which seeks to study and nurture the strengths of the human mind rather than focusing on the weaknesses--the psychology of hope. Limited edition archival prints available here http://www.rawtoastdesign.com/store/hope%20is%20the%20new%20fear/index.htm

Lost In Translation - This was an illo done for the January 15th issue of American Way on an article about an aspiring novelist's journey to getting his first novel published - Catch a Fallen Star. After repeated attempts with his own agent he ultimately had to settle for having his life's dream published in Poland — in a language that he couldn't understand.

Show of Hands - This illustration was done for the March issue of Indianapolis Monthly magazine. They were looking for something to quickly and cleverly communicate that they have a good bunch of volunteers (that do more than their share of volunteering). Also to somehow incorporate the headline "Show of Hands". So I put those notes between two pieces of rawtoast and fed them to my illustration concept generating robot (version 2.5) and this was what he told me to draw.
