Concept Sketches - When figuring out how the chair would comfortably fulfill its seating purpose, we not only considered how much room for the lower body and legs would take, but also what materials they would effectively sit on.
Concept Sketches - Further expansion on the Petalo idea involved differently seating configurations, such as those for four or six instead of five. We also explored different ways to support the load of what we would place in the hollow alcove area in the center.
Rendering - A simulated rendering of the Petalo Chair in the 5th floor lobby of the School of Design and Arts building.

Petalo Chair

In late 2009 I worked with a group of classmates to conceptualize and prototype a chair that could be installed on a particular floor of the School of Design and Arts building.

The five-seater Petalo was inspired by a five-petaled flower to symbolize its installation on the 5th floor of the building - the industrial design floor. The flower theme also represented the birth of new ideas on this floor. The seats are arranged around a central gap in which lights, plants or other fixtures may be installed.
