Before - the main entrance to the community centre - This is the exterior of the community centre, it has since been painted. The building is clearly on a council estate, it was built during the 50's and was only built to be tempoary along with all the other buildings on the estate.
Before - in main office area - This photo shows just how much work needs doing, there is no door on the main working office area. The hall way is plain and uninviting.
Before - in the meeting room - This is now the meeting room, but here it has also bobled up as an office and storage space.
Before - in the meeting room - Here we can see how the furniture needs updating, these small rooms need carfully selected pieces rather than random collection of old furniture.
After - looking into the hallway - A lighter, brighter and more inviting entrance to the community centre, with photo frames ready for the users to personalise.
After - Keep Clam and Eat Cup Cakes - The dominant concept for the kitchen was the slogan "keep calm and eat cupcakes". The kitchen was a donation so we had little say in the design, however we were able to bring in the accessories.
After - Keep Calm and Put the Kettle On - The theme continues...
After - in the main communal area - Here we are in the main communal eating and socialising area, all the tables and chairs have been chosen as they are stackable, allowing the spec to be cleared when required.
Work in progress - in the main communal area - Covered pin boards for menus and other information. Stackable furniture. Retro prints.
After - Pocketed Leaflets - A pin board which has covered in old jean pockets to hold leaflets. This concept was developed to add more of an individual and quirky feel to the community centre.
After - in the meeting room - This is 1 of 3 chairs which I covered for this room. Each chair has a different fabric to create a more funky atmosphere.
After - in the meeting room - Another of the chairs which I covered. Here we can also see the wall which was covered by those volunteering at the community centre.
After - in the meeting room - This is the 3rd chair which I covered. Overall I feel that they along with the other design aspects of this room help create an informal and relaxed atmosphere which was the desired effect.

Nantybwch Community Project

Pinkspiration set up this community project, we had a small community centre in the Welsh Valleys as our work experience project. The brief was to transform an ugly dated interior to a comfortable and homely environment in which the community can come together, have meetings, be involved in social community events and to have a home from home safe place.
