This diagram represents the rationalization of food insecurity among college students at UNT. During the analysis of almost 30 interviews with food insecure students at the university, a classmate of mine and I learned that students often rationalize their own state of food insecurity because it is perceived as "normal."

A Population Assessment of Food Insecure Students on the UNT Campus

In Fall 2014 I conducted a population assessment project through a graduate ethnographic methods course for the Dean of Students at the University of North Texast (UNT). As a class we interviewed almost 30 food insecure students at UNT and conducted several focus groups with food secure students. with another classmate, I analyzed data regarding the overall story of how a student became food insecure and what food insecurity meant to them. The findings from our research supported the opening of a campus food pantry at UNT. Students can now access food and hygiene products for free, no questions asked.
