Design for Need

First Year project: Millions of women and children have to walk miles every day to a water source. The water they are collecting is infested with viruses and bacteria, which can cause life threatening illness and diseases such as diarrhoea. WaterAid UK (1 Jul 2012)
The water transportation and purification container will reduce the stress and strain that women and children’s bodies are put under whilst transporting water over very long distances and often difficult terrain. The container will be a barrel that will be pushed or pulled on the ground so it will have a lower centre of gravity. Therefore they will be able to transport more water at a time and won’t have to make as many trips. The container will have a capacity of over 25 litres, which is more than they would be able to carry using traditional methods. This will also open up time for children to go to school and the women to care for their family and work. .
