The Black Door - Unbuilt Award 2025

A threshold between the seen and unseen, heard and unheard. Once it closes, the descent begins

The Black Door is a subterranean acoustic installation located on Poveglia Island, a site long associated with silence, plague, and erasure. Approached by boat, the visitor sees only one thing: a black door, embedded in the ground — unmarked, unresolved. It is the only visible architecture, and the only way forward. The project guides the visitor through three underground rooms, each one smaller, quieter, and darker than the last. What begins as sound ends in silence. What begins above ends below.

The design brief called for a spatial experience where architecture communicates beyond function — where meaning is shaped through proportion, material, and atmosphere. The Black Door proposes a descent into silence, using no sound equipment, no technology — only passive, architectural means to create a sensory and emotional journey.
