Material World - Nature's Engineering

Based on this year’s theme of ‘Material World’ from the competition of The Society of Dyers and Colourists, my work took a turn away from the materiality of the 21 Century and looked to patterns in bacterial growth – one of the earliest forms of life.
Designing for S/S womenswear, the work took an organic focus – mixing microscopic pictures of algae formations with lichens and decaying plant life.
Thinking about how technology has become an integral part of modern living, technological elements were designed to ‘grow’ and appear within the organic matter. Pops of acidic, synthetic colour were used to suggest this appearance of technology, with imagery of circuit boards creeping through the designs.
