I recreated this reproduction of a silk velvet ottoman yastik, probably 17thC, with graphic carnation motif and tulip borders. I drew this repeat pattern as vector images in Illustrator, and also created my own red "velvet" ombre background. I then scanned a gold silk swatch of real fabric, adjusted it in Photoshop, imported it into Illustrator, dropped it into my swatch library, and used it to fill the motif areas.
In 2006, I created a couture art to wear vest for a woman in a rock band. I found detail inspiration from an long antique robe from Pakistan. I then patchworked pieces of various materials together in a scalloped pattern. After drawing out the embroidery details using Illustrator, I converted it to a rasterized file that could then be read by my programmable home embroidery stitch sewing machine. The machines largest stitchable area is 5" X 7", so I had to break it into different groupings that were darned together from the back, before stitching onto the neckline of the garment.

Surface Design and Textile Repeats

A mighty collection of dying, knitting, embroidery (both by hand and designs I created and stitched on my sewing machine with programmable embroidery software), weaving, silkscreen, and textile repeat prints (both by hand and commercially printed).
