In 2008 the student body at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire voted to have an official mascot to represent their non-representational athletic name, the Blugolds.
In my research I found two old examples of illustrations dating back to the 1970s.

The design process took many iterations until the final tweaks were finished. The final logo is the historic EC that has been the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's athletic logo for over thirty years.
