Groove (Typography Project)

This was a challenging but fun final for my Typography class taught by Steve Mehallo. We were asked to choose one word and come up with a creative way to use it. Kind of a "word play". For my project I found an orange serving platter at a thrift store and hand painted "groove" on to it with stencils I cut out. I tried a bunch of different fonts but I felt that helvetica in italics gave the right look. Nice strong rhythmic lines with a slant almost like rhythm marks in sheet music. Then I put the platter into a box. Surrounded it by tinfoil so that the white Christmas lights would be amplified. And I spliced the light wires into computer speakers that I plugged my iPod into. This way the lights blinked with the music. All my experiments with audio gear as a kid paid off!
