I led a team of students in collaboration with HIWIN to create a mascot for their five-axis robotic arm. The final design should resonate with the public and needs to convey a message that automation technology plays the role of partner in our lifestyle.
Characters do not exist alone, their significance is supported by a compelling story. The team started with identifying several groups in the Taiwanese society that represent several mainstream values and conducted ethnographic interviews with individuals in such groups.
The team analyzed the interview content and picked out the traits in behavior and logic that became the essence of each group's values in order to form design criteria for the coming design phase.
With main values set, team members proposed story plots, each with a different emphasize on the values that the story represents.
Storyboards were then created, while the aesthetics of the story were also taking shape.
Various designs of the characters were then proposed based on the different storyboards that were proposed.
Finalization of various proposals of character designs.
Final Design
Final mascot was integrated with the actual five-axis robotic arms and programmed to execute various dance moves.
