BRUISE // MESA

"Bruise" is a poem by me, and "Mesa" is an extract from a Robert Service book.

I had the idea to do a reduction woodcut piece in which I physically broke pieces off the block as I went along. When I found this lovely piece of scrapwood in the sculpture department of SFAI I was inspired to use the empty space created by the piece sticking out for text, as I was also in a letterpress class at the time.

The two texts were chosen to relate to the breaking and the fragility of the human body, and the way that mountains and mesas are made in part by giant breaks in the earth. I also felt the colors I could use for each set of imagery worked well internally to each print as well as together as an edition.
