A sample of the game's appearance. Our programmer managed to create a particle generator in Flash in order to enhance the butterfly's effect.
The "phoenix butterfly" avatar glided, could flap on command to raise the player's altitude, and progressed across a color palette in order to indicate "health" remaining before game over.
This is a special effect smoke cloud used when a player flies into a flame hazard.
Since the theme for Game Jam inspired us to take a Mayan inspiration for our game, I wanted to be sure that the color palette felt tropical. Warm colors were in general good for the player, while neutrals were bad.
The flame hazards had simple animations.
We were encouraged to create a poster for our game as well, if we had the time.
The ending screen, minus the actual score, which was printed in-engine.

B'ak'tun

Created in under 48 hours for the 2011 Global Game Jam, B'ak'tun is a Flash-based freerunning sidescroller based on a twist in Mayan aesthetics and mythology. Players act as a "phoenix" and rejuvenate the world beneath them by scattering their own sacrificial ash.

B'ak'tun won 2nd place at DePaul's Game Jam and 1st in Project Night Light. I was the sole artist responsible for all assets. There's a lot we could've refined with a longer production period, but for being whipped up in a hurry, I'm proud of the unified and appealing art direction.
