Subway Wind Generator - A new technology harnesses the windy subway conditions, providing electricity and entertainment for commuters. Not only does this generator return electricity to the system at peak demand, but it provides a stop-animation advertising to delight commuters.
Broad Ideation and Topic Selection - Starting with the broad topic "Urban Greenifying," I explored a broad range of concepts. A large amount of concepts were generated for energy use. Weighting factors such as mass produceability and impact, "Energy" was the winning category.
Ideation, Research, Functional Mockup, Aesthetic Refinement - I developed a low-wind power concept, found a new, compelling technology, created a proof-of-concept, and developed the form based on transportation cues.
Manufacturing, Assembly, Installation Considerations - Current was designed with union subway workers in mind. It is easy assembled on site, compartmentalized by job function: installer and electrician. A team of 5-6 workers can install a site within the 3 hour window when trains are not running.
Revenue Generator - Electricity is generated when it is needed most, and when it is most expensive, producing $78,480 per year per installation site. Advertising generates another $70,000 per location.
