Bak Chang Bean Bag - The Rice Dumpling is also known as Bak Chang in Teochew or Hokkien or Zong Zi in Mandarin. It is a mouth-watering snack of glutinous rice combined with a selection of sweet or savoury fillings, deftly shaped into a small pyramid with bamboo or reed leaves. Customarily prepared for the Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the scrumptious dumpling is now a daily favourite, readily available all year round. Over the years, the original dumpling has been adapted and improved and today there is a mind-boggling array of choices to suit every taste!
The Peranakans, or Straits Chinese, use blue colouring from the blue tea flower to give their dumplings a sweet tang and distinct look, and typically use pandan leaves to wrap them. The Hokkien prefer the savoury variety, with stewed minced meat and crunchy chestnuts.
The great-tasting dumpling is reason enough for friends and families to gather; seated at a round table, unwrapping and savouring the great-tasting dumpling together.
