Main character, Emma Harte, opens her own retail Emporium ready for Christmas 1913, so I was tasked with producing a whole range of everyday products and festive treats to stock the shelves. I had a nightmare with the Yule Logs when the boxes turned out to be hinged shoe-box style, not lid and base as I'd expected. I sweated through one of the hottest days of the year trying to bodge the already printed design to wrap the boxes and OF COURSE these Frankenstein creations ended up featured in massive close-up and in virtually every shot! A really fun task linking the flashback and 1970s portions of the show was to create Harte's branded goods evolving through the decades to fill display cases lining the corridors in the Harte's office. Spent way too much time on these because do you catch more than a fleeting, blurry glance of these in the show? Of course you don't.
My biggest job was producing mountains and mountains of paperwork for the 1970s Harte's offices. This included everything from detailed financial reports, to inter-office memos, to Emma's personal correspondence. We had loads of fun trying to print a fake multi-page fax, which was supposed to be seen coming out of the machine in action, but, guess what? Cut! (images copyright Channel 4, The Forge)
One of those last minute jobs that arrives right at the end of the day and you wish you had more time to spend on it, but it just needs to be done NOW! Called on those GCSE textiles skills again to run off some quick fashion sketches to add to the mood boards. I really loved the denim ones, but it was the lycra ladies that ended up with massive close-ups! (images copyright Channel 4, The Forge)
Having just done a couple of hot dog stands on Talamasca, I was immediately tasked with making another one for the 1970s street outside Harte's Department Store. Chloe was keen for this to have a really homemade Mom and Pop feel and it's a shame it didn't get seen.

Got to put on my Prop Making hat for the first time in ages to design, make and hand embroider these Christmas stockings for Christmas 1913. This was another quite last minute job and imagine my horror when a load of velvet turned up for me to make them out of! Embroidering on velvet against the clock was a total nightmare and not something I'm in any hurry to do again, but this was a rare example of something turning out OK and getting a big close-up, so it was all worth it!
