Blacksmith Studio

Blacksmith studio, situated in Penland,
North Carolina.

The blacksmith studio draws the apprentices
deeper and deeper into the world of blacksmiths
through a series of experiences and observations.
It is an open studio covered by a single barn-like
roof that is lifted by concrete columns. The
architecture becomes a part of the landscape. The
upper desk that accommodate offices, bathrooms
and a classroom. These platforms also serve as
observation decks that overlook the blacksmith’s
common work area and attached forging spaces.
The experience comes to a close with an
unobstructed view of the natural atrium found in
the valley below.
The studio is composed of materials that embody
the spirit of the blacksmith. The white oak is a
local material and the concrete, brick and metal
have a minimal impact on the environment. As a
result, the studio looks grounded, raw and strong;
like the blacksmith’s art and being.
